Key Details:

  • Working Pattern: Full-time, 35 hours per week. Part-time applications will be considered.
  • Salary: Senior Clinician Grade 9 £59,966–£67,468 per annum, plus a generous veterinary supplement, Out of Hours stipend, and employer pension. Professorial range subject to negotiation.
  • Duties: Leadership and delivery of small animal surgery clinical service, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, clinical scholarship, and administration. Participation in an out-of-hours rota.

About the Role:

  • The client is seeking an experienced Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon to deliver and lead a high-quality small animal surgery service within a teaching hospital environment.
  • The post holder will provide expert referral-level clinical care, guide diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making, and contribute to clinical quality assurance.
  • The role will include supervision and mentoring of clinical scholars and residents, supporting their progression towards specialist board examinations. The surgeon will participate in the out-of-hours rota to ensure appropriate supervision and continuity of care.
  • Teaching will form a core component of the post.
  • The surgeon will plan, organise, and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, contribute to assessments, and provide timely feedback. The post holder will promote creative approaches to learning in line with institutional quality enhancement priorities. They will demonstrate leadership through the development of clinical services, participation in research-led education, and active contribution to academic development.
  • Clinical scholarship activity is expected.
  • The surgeon will maintain a consistent output in high-quality clinical publications, collaborate on clinical research and trials, and present at national and international meetings. Administrative responsibilities will include contributions to hospital and divisional duties, performance review processes, and service development.
  • Candidates at Grade 10 will provide academic, corporate, and strategic leadership across clinical service, research, teaching, and administration. They will generate research from clinical workload, manage projects and change, and contribute to strategy, budgetary oversight, and quality enhancement.
